Harijan dominated village constructs its own road (SRTT)

Village Konajhir in Hasanabad Panchayat in Sehore block is inhabited by members of 31 households, the economic condition of whom sans one is to be seen to be believed! The village though is situated on the main road of Sehore-Icchawar, but little has been done in the name of development. Perhaps this village of 12 Harijan households, seven snake charmers, nine Muslim beggars, three OBC marginal workers and one Khati household, hold little influence on the development administration.

In such a scenario, comprehensive village planning for identifying issues of concern of the community as a whole was resorted to and as expected a multitude of concerns cutting across sectors such as livelihood, water, infrastructure development,education came up during the discussion. From a plethora of issues, the construction of village approach-road along with a culvert for the same was identified as the concern for immediate redressal.It was apparent that the issue was in the minds of the people from the very beginning, but for the paucity of funds, it was pending from a long time the issue held special significances as just last year a bullock-cart carrying a patient got stuck in the muck during the rains and was rescued after nearly four months when the rains finally stopped.

The impediment lay however in mobilizing resources to the tune of Rs. 32000 for construction for the road. However, after constant perusal from the community and the NGO, a part of the finance was mobilized from the Gram Kosh, whole of the labour was done without any charges by the community, about 15 percent came from the SHG formed under the women empowerment programme, Swashakti, and the budgetary gap of Rs. 10,000 is to be fulfilled by the PIF.

Thus, our modest support in terms of mobilizing the community and the Panchayat representatives along with the financial contribution proved to be the most crucial factor. It was further decided to provide constant support to this Gram Sabha for it to plan methodically and collectively for speedy resolution of the other identified problems.
