Protect children’s rights through promotion of basic education by innovative approaches
| Description |
Madhya Pradesh has historically been a state with very low level of literacy. Way back in 1978, during preparation of Sixth Five Year Plan, it was identified by the Planning Commission as an educationally backward state (Citizen’s Report on MDG’s). In 1991, 56 percent of its population was recorded illiterate, 70 percent of the women were unlettered and literacy levels of schedule caste and schedule tribe were 35.1 and 21.5 respectively (State HDR, 2002). In 2001 census, the literacy figures have improved to 64.1 percent, with 77 percent for men and 50 percent for women. However an intra regional and a gendered analysis of the progress reveal there’s a long way to go. More than 90 percent of the low performing districts of 1991 continue to be low performers in 2001 with literacy levels varying between 30 to 50 percent as against the state’s aggregate of 64 percent. |
