Empowering Adolescents and Youth with knowledge and life skills to improve reproductive and sexual health in Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh

 
Description Adolescents and youth are the largest demographic group in Indian society and represent the future of the country. It is important that communities understand the risks faced by adolescents and take steps to mitigate them. Through this Adolescent and Youth Empowerment project Samarthan enables adolescent boys and girls understand these problems and take steps to nurture their healthy development. At the same time it gives opportunities to the youth to develop a perspective towards their role in overall development of the village.

Key Objectives
  • To develop a trained cadre of youth (girls and boys) to facilitate orientation of other youth groups in the villages on RH issues with special concentration on addressing youth fertility
  • To develop youth groups to monitor and help to improve reproductive health service delivery in the villages from the vantage point of the poor and the marginalized
  • Engagement of youth groups, PRI members and ASHA’s for addressing young fertility
Key output
  • In 205 project villages of three Blocks of Sehore district with the project interventions 7196 facilitative youth cadre were developed with improved knowledge and attitude on reproductive health
  • The project’s notable achievement has been the development of over 400 youth leaders in the intervened Panchayats who have emerged as change agents for the development of their village
  • The capacity building on life skills has been especially beneficial in changing attitudes of the youth
  • The project is able to achieve to change the mind-set of the conservative ideas on menstruation as a biological process which is normal for women/girls
  • Developed a short advocacy film as well as a narrative study of the interventions taken and results achieved
